Dragon Ball fans can finally revisit Gogeta's original design from Akira Toriyama himself. In a recent edition of the Toriyama Archives from the official Dragon Ball website, franchise creator Akira Toriyama's original design for Gogeta was republished more than two decades after it was first made widely available. The original draft sketch, which readers can see for themselves below, showcases Gogeta in a dynamic pose that feels ripped straight out of the Dragon Ball anime despite predating the character's debut.
The sketch was published via the Toriyama Archives this week along with a caption reading, "Here we have an invaluable draft depicting Toriyama's very first drawing of Gogeta. It was included in a special booklet that came with the DVD box set for Dragon Box The Movies. In a handwritten message alongside the illustration, Toriyama reflects:'There were already so many powerful characters in the manga that I was starting to run out of ideas...
I felt my blood pressure going up while thinking up a design for yet another, more powerful character.' " Gogeta is one of the Dragon Ball franchise's more rarely seen, if still extremely iconic, fusion characters. This combined form of Goku and Vegeta was first seen in the 15th franchise film overall, as well as the 12th Dragon Ball Z feature, Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn.
Released in 1995, Fusion Reborn was set in the midst of the Majin Buu Saga, just before the rise of Super Buu. The film revolves around the release of a massive wave of evil energy, leading to the near-unstoppable demon known as Janemba. This reality-warping foe is so powerful that Goku and Vegeta are forced to fuse into Gogeta in order to even stand a chance against Janemba, albeit at first unsuccessfully.
Since then, Gogeta has appeared in both the Dragon Ball anime and manga. In the anime series, Gogeta first appeared in Dragon Ball GT in the episode "Fusion!! The Ultimate Super Gogeta," Which took place near the end of the Shadow Dragon Saga.
Surprisingly, Gogeta didn't make his manga debut until the 2012 Dragon Ball Heroes spinoff series, Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission, while the character wouldn't be introduced into the proper franchise canon until 2018's Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Unfortunately for die-hard fans of the character, Gogeta probably won't be taking center stage in any upcoming Dragon Ball titles. Currently, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Dragon Ball Super 2: Galactic Patrol, which will adapt the hit Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga from the Dragon Ball Super manga.
While Gogeta doesn't have a part of his own to play in the story, the fusion is mentioned by Goku during a brief aside with Galactic Patrol agents Merus and Jaco.
