Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho has ordered a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities after five people passed away in a mine collapse in Lolgorian, Narok County. During a high-level consultative meeting on Thursday, July 23, Joho noted that compliance with regulations would protect lives and support responsible mining activity. “The Cabinet Secretary also directed an intensified nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities.
He urged artisanal and small-scale miners to comply fully with the provisions of the Mining Act, 2016, emphasizing that adherence to the law is essential to safeguarding lives, protecting the environment and promoting responsible mineral resource development,”read a statement issued after the meeting. Additionally, Joho stated individuals who violate mining regulations would be dealt with in accordance with the law. “CS Joho warned that those found engaging in illegal mining activities or otherwise contravening the law would face appropriate legal action,”the statement added.
The gold mine tunnel collapse in Kilimapesa on Tuesday, July 21, left five dead and trapped several miners underground. Some survivors were rescued and taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while rescue teams continued efforts to locate any remaining trapped miners. Joho expressed condolences to affected families and stated investigations were underway to determine the cause of the collapse.
He stated the government would ensure anyone found to have endangered lives through negligence or illegal activities is held accountable. Similar fatal incidents have occurred in recent months, prompting the government to strengthen oversight of mining operations across the country and improve compliance within the sector. The meeting had been convened to fast-track the reopening of Hillo Gold Mines in Marsabit County following a directive from President William Ruto.
A multi-agency team was established and given seven working days to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the mines and advise on their safe reopening. The team will verify artisanal mining areas, confirm registered mining cooperatives, and assess requirements for issuing artisanal mining permits.
